Join us at the 2024 Water Quality for Fisheries Symposium:
The Water Quality for Fisheries Symposium will be held at the
Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort, NC,
from October 9-11, 2024.
The Water Quality for Fisheries Symposium, hosted by Coastal Carolina Riverwatch, is an annual event that brings together experts, stakeholders, and community members to address pressing water quality issues affecting coastal fisheries in North Carolina.
Through a dynamic agenda featuring cutting-edge research presentations, interactive sessions on monitoring and policy, and valuable networking opportunities, the symposium fosters collaboration between scientists, industry representatives, and advocates.
Attendees will gain insights into the latest developments in water quality science and engage with solutions to protect and enhance water quality for fisheries.
Attendees at the Water Quality for Fisheries Symposium will benefit from a comprehensive agenda that includes various opportunities for learning, engagement, and networking:
- Cutting-edge Research Presentations: These will focus on the latest studies and solutions addressing water pollution impacts on fisheries. Topics include pollutants like PFAS, heavy metals, stormwater runoff, plastic pollution, and municipal wastewater, all of which directly affect coastal waters. Researchers will share findings on these and other critical issues.
- Interactive Sessions on Monitoring and Policy: Participants will engage in sessions designed to provide practical skills in water quality monitoring and insights into policy development. These sessions aim to bridge the gap between research and action, empowering attendees to contribute to solutions that improve water quality in North Carolina’s coastal ecosystems.
- Networking Opportunities: Attendees will have the chance to connect with a diverse group of experts, including waterkeepers, researchers, policymakers, and community stakeholders. These networking opportunities are critical for fostering collaborations, sharing knowledge, and identifying potential funding sources for water quality initiatives.
The symposium will feature keynote speakers Veronica Carter, Councilperson for the Town of Leland, and Chiara Klein, Program Coordinator for the Duke University Superfund Research Center, who will address the critical topic of increasing access to information and policy-making processes for communities impacted by chemical contaminants in wild-caught fish.
