
The Newport Community Resiliency Project is a community-driven initiative led by Coastal Carolina Riverwatch to strengthen Newport’s resilience against environmental challenges. This project focuses on addressing local concerns like flooding, agricultural runoff, and sustainable development while promoting collaboration and education within the community.
Project Goals
- Identify Local Concerns
Engage Newport residents to understand the specific environmental challenges they face, including flooding, stormwater management, and agricultural impacts on water quality. - Promote Resilient Development
Collaborate with stakeholders to explore solutions that balance growth and environmental sustainability, leveraging tools like the Resilient Coastal Communities Program (RCCP). - Educate and Empower the Community
Provide resources, workshops, and educational events to help residents learn about resiliency planning, understand their role in creating change, and stay involved in the project’s progress. - Build Momentum and Partnerships
Foster relationships with community members, government officials, and local organizations to create a unified approach to addressing Newport’s environmental challenges.
What We’ve Accomplished So Far
November 2024 Meeting
- Engaged with community members in discussions about local flooding, stormwater issues, and other environmental concerns.
- Identified key stakeholders and started prioritizing community-driven solutions.
December 2024 Meeting
- Introduced the Resilient Coastal Communities Program (RCCP) to community attendees, outlining its benefits for Newport.
- Facilitated an open forum to gather input and guide the next steps in the project.

February 2025 Meeting
- On February 13, 2025, the Newport Resiliency Project Community Meeting in Newport, NC, proved to be a productive gathering despite chilly, rainy, and windy conditions.
- Hosted at the local library, the meeting engaged three dedicated community members in discussions about flooding, sea level rise, and king tides.
- The session not only generated valuable conversations but also attracted two interested volunteers.
